It is indeed official, the younger Alcantara has also left Barcelona after suffering major injuries that didn’t allow him to be part of our dressing room long enough to make an impact. The Brazilian was arguably the most skillful youngster we had in recent times. Especially in comparison to the likes of Denis Suarez, Deulofeu & Paco Alcacer, it is fair to say that Rafinha was the most promising talent but football hasn’t been fair to him with injuries and surgeries constantly keeping him out of action. He arrived in La Masia at the age of 13 (in 2006) and he has spent all his footballing career with us except for his successful loan spell at Celta de Vigo. So it is definitely hard to imagine what would be going through his mind given that he’d be leaving Spain for the first time as a footballer.
Rafinha would move to Inter Milan on a short-loan with a buy option for €35 million, which Inter can choose to exercise if they feel he would be good enough for them in the future. So technically there is also a possibility that Inter choose to not exercise their buy option but with the kind of farewell that the club & players have given him, it looks like it is for financial reasons that Inter have chosen to buy him after the current season comes to an end.
Best time at Barca:
The younger Alcantara’s best spell in a Barcelona shirt under Luis Enrique when he was almost playing as much as a regular towards the last couple of months after we changed our formation from our traditional 4-3-3 to a 3-4-3. Rafinha was deployed as a right-wing back in that setup as his work-rate combined with attacking flair allowed him to handle the flank all by himself. He was also part of the eleven in the historic 6-1 ‘Remontada’ against Paris Saint-Germain, definitely the most unforgettable night for him playing for Barcelona.
However, his promising spell came to an end in April 2017 after he had to undergo a surgery in his internal meniscus ailment (knee) and it ruled him out of action till the end of the year. Things might have been very different in case he never had injured his knee and convinced Valverde that he could be in his plans. But that’s football and it always makes us expect the unexpected. Now its time for all we Cules to wish our boy good luck with his future endeavours and that he reaches greater heights in life.
